Flea Control – Treating Your Pets and Your Home
Treating Pets with Fleas
All pets in the household must be treated for fleas. We recommend Frontline Plus as a topical treatment for a minimum of 3 months to control a flea outbreak. Monthly application is recommended for flea prevention from spring until the heavy frost.
Is the Flea Treatment Working?
To monitor the progress of your flea treatment, simply place a white sheet over your pet's resting place. You can then monitor the amount of flea dirt (black specs that turn red when wet) on the sheet. Decreasing amounts of flea dirt indicate effective treatment.
Another way to monitor is to use a flea comb to record how many fleas are caught each day.
Getting Rid of Fleas in Your Home
Vacuum the floors frequently and thoroughly paying attention to the corners, along the walls edges, under the furniture, and other low traffic areas. If you have a vacuum with a bag, CHANGE the bag after every use. If you have a bag-less vacuum, empty the container after every use. Flea eggs and pupae can live in the bag and canister.
Also, you will need to discard or frequently wash your pet's bedding. Steam clean the carpets, if possible, to slow down flea development and allow flea larvae to dry up. Use Vet-Kem Area Treatment Spray to treat the carpet and your pet's bedding after everything has been cleaned.
